4 of 4 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Nice mix of mystery stories, December 27, 2010 This review is from: Curtains (Kindle Edition) I've read Nicholson stories before, and his trademark suspense is on display here. There's some psychological crime stories, a couple of murder tales, and a little dark humor, as well as a couple of lighter stories. JA Konrath's gangster story is also dark fun. A great bargain to sample the many facets of this author. Recommended. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy if you read Ashes by Nicholson, April 8, 2011 This review is from: Curtains (Kindle Edition) I love Nicholson's short stories. Yet I began wondering why I had read over half of these and got online to investigate. Turns out that alot of these are from his book Ashes. It might have been my oversight but I felt it was a waste to have purchase both after skimming over the previously read stories. Of course, it was less than a dollar for the kindle version. 5 of 6 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Southern-Fried Chillers, January 22, 2011 This review is from: Curtains (Kindle Edition) Think "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" filtered through the storytelling sensibilities of Stephen King and Manly Wade Wellman--twisty, Southern Gothic grotesqueries penned in Nicholson's distinctive Appalachian-flavored voice.

If you've read other Nicholson shorts before, you may find a bit of double-dipping here, as these stories aren't exclusive to this particular collection. Still, old fans will find plenty to love, and newbies who may be put off by the more overtly horrific, supernatural stories in this gifted author's cannon will find "Curtains" a great place to start. Great bonus contributions from J.A. Konrath and Simon Wood, as well.

Buy this, and then shell out a few more bucks for "The Red Church", "The Skull Ring", "Ashes", and "Speed Dating with the Dead", and see why Nicholson deserves to be a household name.

I think you have great potential. Maybe not James Lee Burke potential, however the first book/novella I read was really goooooood! "CRIME BEAT". So do your other novels stay away from advertising for the right wing propaganda machine. FAUXNEWS! FOX...

Thanks for the kind words, D, James Lee Burke is one of my favorite mystery authors. I drew a lot on my 12 years of experience as a local newspaper journalist for Crime Beat, so perhaps that's why it sounds like the "news" we may be familiar with. For the record, I think the mainstream media is largely being supplanted by the grassroots, crowdsourced media of Facebook, Twitter, and blogs--which of course scares governments, corporate tyrants, and other control freaks to death!
